Lesson Plans: September 24 – 28

Pre-AP English I

9/24:  MUGshot Monday – editing exercise; Raisin in the Sun – Students will begin reading the play as a class and annotate as we go so that they are focused and thinking as they read, watching for symbolism, character and theme development, as well as motifs that appear throughout the play.  Students will also participate in online discussion through the Google Classroom so that they might share insight with one another as they analyze Hansberry’s work; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/25:  Literary Term of the Week – Anti-Hero; Raisin in the Sun – Students will continue reading, annotating, and analyzing as a group both in class and through the Google Classroom; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/26:  PLC Day for teachers; Half-Day for students – Dismiss at 12:15 p.m.  Students will complete any online discussion in the Google Classroom; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/27:  Raisin in the Sun – Students will continue reading, annotating, and analyzing as a group both in class and through the Google Classroom; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST Tomorrow.

9/28:  SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST.

English I

9/24:  MUGshot Monday – editing exercise; Langston Hughes – Students will do an author study so that they will sharpen their research skills as they learn about an important figure in American literature; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/25:  Literary Term of the Week – Anti-Hero; “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes – Students will read this short story as a class and answer analysis questions; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/26:  PLC Day for teachers; Half-Day for students – Dismiss at 12:15 p.m.  Students will read their SSR novel in preparation for Book Talks by October 12; SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST on Friday.

9/27:  “Thank You, M’am” – Students will take notes on theme in literature, determine the theme of Hughes’ short story, and write a meaningful thesis statement for a literary analysis essay (writing the thesis only); SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST Tomorrow.

9/28:  SAT Vocabulary List 3 TEST.

AP English I

9/17:  Write Like a Pro Review – practice sentences available over appositives, absolutes, and participles; SAT Vocabulary List 2 posted in Google Classroom – Flashcards DUE Friday 9/21, TEST Friday 9/28; Students will continue their Raisin in the Sun background research in preparation for teaching the class beneficial information for understanding the play- Presentations will be made Tuesday and Wednesday

9/18:  Literary Term of the Week – antagonist; Students will begin Raisin in the Sun background research presentations

9/19:  Raisin in the Sun background research presentations

9/20:  Begin reading Raisin in the Sun taking notes/answering questions for completing character chart, discovering theme and symbolism, creating conflict map, and learning dramatic devices; Vocab flashcards DUE Tomorrow

9/21:  Continue reading Raisin in the Sun

English I

9/17:  MUGshot Monday – editing exercise; SAT Vocabulary List 2 posted in Google Classroom – students will begin creating flashcards for each word DUE Friday 9/21, TEST Friday 9/28

9/18:  Literary Term of the Week – antagonist; Students will begin reviewing notes, assignments, and readings from the past few weeks in preparation for a TEST on Thursday 9/20

9/19:  Students will continue their review in preparation for a TEST Tomorrow 9/20

9/20:  TEST; Bring book tomorrow for sustained, silent reading

9/21:  SSR; Students who have completed their books may schedule their book talks; Book Talks (test grade) must be completed by 10/12

Lesson Plans: September 10 – 14

AP English I

9/10:  Mugshot Monday; Narrative Essay -Students will work through peer editing with a partner in the final steps of revising and editing so that their narratives are ready to turn in Wednesday 9/12.

9/11:  LTOW – analogy; Narrative Essay – Students will apply steps of revising and editing to their essays as well as the components of Writing Like a Pro steps so that their final copy will be publication ready TOMORROW.

9/12:  Grammar- Students will take notes over the four kinds of sentence structures and create their own in order to understand the variety of sentences; Novel Study – Students will be introduced to the play Raisin in the Sun and the background research project which will lay the foundation as we begin to read the play by Lorraine Hansberry.

9/13:  Grammar – Students will play Trashketball as a review of the four kinds of sentence structure.

9/14:  Novel Study – Students will use classtime to research and compile needed information for the background research project which will lay the foundation for studying the play Raisin in the Sun.  Presentations will begin Monday, 9/17

English I

9/4:  Literary Term of the Week – anagrams; Personal Narrative Essay – Show Not Tell     Students will learn how to provide and practice providing sensory details to their writing so that they can show the reader their message instead of simply telling them; SAT Vocab List 1 TEST on Friday 9/7

9/5:  Personal Narrative Essay – Writing Dialogue & Adding Sensory Details     Students will review how to properly include dialogue into their writing so that they can accurately include compelling dialogue in their stories; they will also work through a Sensory Questionnaire so that they can include these descriptors in their rough drafts which they will begin writing – Rough Drafts are DUE Monday 9/10; SAT Vocab List 1 TEST on Friday 9/7

9/6:  Personal Narrative Essay – Write Like a Pro     Students will learn six simple steps to immediately improve their writing so that they can broaden their audience as they share their stories – Rough Drafts are DUE Monday 9/10; SAT Vocab List 1 TEST Tomorrow

9/7:  SAT Vocabulary List 1 TEST; Personal Narrative Essay – Rough Draft DUE Monday 9/10
